Oncology And Cancer Screening - Aim & Scope

Oncology and Cancer Screening publishes original peer-reviewed, population-based research on cancer etiology, prevention, surveillance, and survivorship. The following topics are of special interest: descriptive, analytical, and molecular epidemiology; biomarkers including assay development, validation, and application; chemoprevention and other types of prevention research in the context of descriptive and observational studies; the role of behavioral factors in cancer etiology and prevention; survivorship studies; risk factors; implementation science and cancer care delivery; and the science of cancer health disparities. Besides welcoming manuscripts that address individual subjects in any of the relevant disciplines.

  1. Risk Factor Epidemiology

Submissions related to exposures and other factors associated with the risks of developing cancer, cancer mortality, and outcomes in cancer survivors including, but not limited to, family history, aging, environment, socioeconomics, diet, obesity, physical inactivity, smoking, and other behaviors, infections, chronic diseases, and use of medications for other indications.

  2. Genetic/Genomic & Molecular Epidemiology

Submissions that include epidemiologic studies, including consortia, that examine DNA-based or other molecular biomarkers, as well as ‘omics, in blood, urine, saliva or other bodily fluids, or in tissue, in relation to cancer risk or outcomes, or that describe the epidemiology of those DNA-based or other molecular markers.

  3. Biomarkers, -Omics & Systems Biology

Submissions related to the development of biomarkers, including ‘omics for future application in epidemiologic studies or future implementation in cancer prevention (e.g., risk stratification or screening), as well as studies describing new methods in relevant areas including the collection, storage, management, and distribution of biological samples and biospecimen science. Studies that focus solely on the development of a biomarker for clinical use in diagnosis, prognosis or treatment response and side effects are not of priority, unless epidemiological components (e.g., effect modification by age, sex) are rigorously applied or mechanistic information about carcinogenesis and/or risk is provided.

  4. Methods & Models

Submissions related to statistical methods or computational models in cancer research. The methods or models should be related to epidemiology; the use of biomarkers for measuring exposure or characterizing disease or precursor conditions; or cancer prevention.

  5. Nutrition & Energy Balance

Submissions on all aspects of nutrition and energy balance and human cancer, including population studies and experimental human feeding and exercise trials, as well as studies describing new methods in relevant areas.

  6. Screening & Early Detection

Submissions related to all aspects of the biology of screening and early detection of cancer in humans, as well as studies describing new methods in relevant areas.

  7. Behavioral & Intervention Research

Submissions that examine determinants of both risky and protective behaviors as well as interventions to promote risk-reducing behaviors, including smoking cessation and prevention; prevention-, screening and early-detection-associated behaviors; relevant interventions; policy studies; decision-making studies; quality-of-life studies; late effects of cancer treatment and survivorship; and studies describing new methods.

  8. Survivorship & Supportive Care

Submissions related to all aspects of both observational and interventional cancer survivorship in humans. Population studies, as well as studies describing new methods in relevant areas, are of particular interest.

  9. Cancer Health Disparities

Submissions that explore the determinants of differences in cancer prevalence, mortality, survivorship, and burden among specific population groups. Studies that examine outcomes of interventions to address disparities at individual, clinical, and community levels are also of interest

  10. Cancer Surveillance Research

Original reports using cancer case and population-based data to examine, test, and develop hypotheses for cancer incidence, mortality, and prevalence.

  11. Implementation Science & Cancer Care Delivery

Submissions focusing on research to improve the quality of cancer care by understanding and intervening on patient, clinician, and health system factors involved in care delivery, as well as studies examining the impact of cancer control and population science on the health and health care of the population, and fostering the rapid integration of research, practice, and policy, across the cancer continuum.
